The original house on this site was an ugly duckling. A 1960's "liver brick" house, facing south-west with potential for fabulous views over Middle Harbour, towards Cammeray.
The brief was to take advantage of the views and to provide additional accommodation, including an artist's studio at the rear, a pool renovation and a large entertaining deck.
It was decided to keep a large proportion of the existing house, in order to minimise costs and use this for accommodating the bedrooms. The new open plan living spaces were then lifted to first floor in order to capitalise on views over Middle Harbour. The new second storey is a lightweight, steel framed pavilion sitting on the heavier masonry podium, of the original house. On the western side of the living areas is a large open terrace, capturing winter and northern sun. Privacy is maintained by a sandstone planter, which runs the full length of the terrace. The continuation of the sandstone wall helps define the entrance to the house and gives the residence its distinctive form from the street.
